Thursday’s sharp rise in bullion futures for February delivery to $905.80 is an important test of the $890 to $900 resistance level and solid proof of growing concern for the weakening dollar. Clearly, the Fed will cut next week and likely continue cutting, polishing gold’s shimmer as a safe-haven investment. Gold warehouse inventories declined 39,693 troy ounces to 7.5 million as of late Wednesday. Early Friday, London prices for immediate delivery reached new records, over $920 an once. Individual investors will have to decide how to split their gold investment allocation, but it is ... Continue

A global stock sell off, an emergency drop in interest rates by the Federal Reserve Bank, and bipartisan support for an economic tax incentive, all within four days equals real fear that a recession is looming. This fear centers around a slow down in American consumer spending, the heart of US business activity. Consumer spending is not something turned off like a water faucet. American consumers have a long history of finding it difficult to cut back on spending. However, the tightening credit market along with evaporating home equity loans might just force consumers to cut back some luxury spending. ... Continue

Can anything ever replace the wonderful properties of 100 percent natural cotton? During the chemical fiber revolution of the 1950’s, 60’s and 70’s, many attempts were made to displace cotton fiber textiles with synthetic alternatives that, in certain applications, couldn’t measure up to the ancient art of spinning cotton into yarn, and cotton yarn into a myriad of products. One textile company up in Canada seems to think it can do it. Not with another synthetic chemical composition, but with agriculturally produced, sustainable, high tech processed natural fibers. In fact, Naturally Advanced Technologies Inc. (OTCBB:NADVF) ... Continue

In what was called an “emergency move,” the Federal Reserve Board sliced both of the key interest rates by three-quarters of a percent yesterday, dropping the overnight lending rate to 3.50 percent and the discount rate to 4.0 percent. It was a given that the Fed would lower the rate at its next meeting, eight days from now, but today’s action was a bit of a surprise to Wall Street. Stock markets both here and abroad are suffering dramatic losses, and the emergency move is likely Bernanke’s way of staving off a market crash. Nobody ... Continue

What Bush Wants President Bush held a media briefing January 18 to announce his proposed economic growth plan. While still in the proposal stage, he acknowledged needing fast bipartisan congressional action to enact tax incentives intended to stimulate the sluggish US economy. The President said the plan must include tax relief, which would be based on income taxes, not payroll taxes, and tax incentives for business investment. Insiders say both the president and congressional leaders acknowledge swift enactment of an economic incentive is vital. March of this year is targeted for implementation of a tax rebate for taxpayers and tax ... Continue

I recently wrote about rising gold prices, jumping as a result of an impending US recession. Most investors see gold as a hedge during troubled economic times, and more US-based investors are moving some of their assets into gold and gold stocks. In India however, something interesting is going on. America’s credit crunch, housing crisis and difficult economic times has had an impact on all global economies, but India’s markets are nonetheless doing quite well these days. And while US investors are selling off stocks and buying up gold, Indian investors are doing the exact opposite. According ... Continue

Last night, for the third time this week, my wife served up chicken for dinner. Chicken and sea-food has been the theme since our Holidays over indulgence. She likes to explain it is about time we make a reluctant effort to move away from consuming so much red meat. I happen to be wishy-washy on that theme, but by strange co-incidence, today marks the second time in a week I find myself here reporting on a chicken menu restaurant chain. Wednesday it was U Food Grill, today, the Dixie Lee Diner parent. Both companies have just recently ... Continue

Everywhere in the financial news lately are articles about the deteriorating condition of the US economy. Continuing declining housing starts and the mortgage credit crunch are leading the headlines. The US dollar has been declining on the international market as the economy slows. Generally, this is bad news for consumers but can be goods news for US based businesses providing services and goods both domestically and exporting to foreign countries. A weak dollar increases the cost of imported goods which American consumers have come to depend on. It also increases costs for businesses that operate in foreign countries. However, US ... Continue

They might have only three locations open for business, but U Food Restaurant Group, Inc. (OTCBB:UFFC) is off to a quick start, doing the right things to be noticed in the crowded, fast food service business. It is a rough, tough industry, not to every speculators taste, but like grandma’s apple pie, just when you thought you were full, there is always room for more. Also like grandma’s pie, the recipe must be bang on right. Boston might not be noted for its culinary delights but one Bostonian, U Food Grill founder and CEO George Naddaff is ... Continue
